Had this player for about 12 months, it took a dump and won't read discs anymore. Specifically, the motor is burned out that spins the disc. Its cheap, and you get what you pay for. Only buy this if you are some sick individual that likes to buy the same electronics every year, even things that get minimal use.
Bought this player less than a year ago and, while it plays OK, to get the tray to retract, I have to turn the unit off (which causes the tray to retract), then turn in back on again. The tray comes out OK, just won't go back in. It only cost ~$60 but I expected a Toshiba product to be of better quality.
I fiddled with every control and tried different HDMI cables and inputs to no avail. I was first dazzled seeing my old dvds playing on my 32" panasonic 720p lcd monitor. There was posterization, image banding or solarization on all my disks. All HD material otherwise looked amazing on my monitor so it's indeed the player itself. Apparently the engine to upconvert works way better on a blu-ray player.I can say I liked the fact that the remote has an eject button which the Sony does not, but then I realized if I eject a disk I still have to get off my hump anyway to get the disk out. I think it's also called false image contouring.
Voila. And then I noticed the upconverting was terrible. I bit the bullet and got a blu-ray Sony BDP-S360 at the recommendation of Best Buy. It's hard to describe, but as you go from one shade of color to the next, it should be smooth, but posterization will show one shade of color and then a next shade lighter or darker in it's own separate band and so on so it looks like steps across a scene or subject. It was not on every frame but as I noticed it, it became way noticeable. No more posterization.
I'm willing to sacrifice that luxury of feeling that a machine does my every beck and call.
After all the run around, it was past my 90 days so I was out of luck. My product lasted less than 60 days. At least they were kind enough to offer a replacement. When it went bad, I called the service number who told me to take it to a service center. I did that and was told I needed to send it in to Toshiba directly. but at a cost more than the price I paid originally. Gee thanks.
Shipping was super fast and the DVD player is great, sleek and has many functions. I love it already.
